Welcome
Gloucester Speleological Society is Gloucestershire’s longest-running caving club — a sociable and active community united by a shared passion for the underground. Based in the Forest of Dean and Cotswolds, our roots are local, but our interests stretch across the UK and beyond.
Whether you're completely new to caving, looking to reconnect with the underground, or a caver wanting to join us in exploring the local caves and mines, you’ll find a friendly, experienced group ready to welcome you.
Come Caving with GSS
Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced caver, you’re welcome to join our regular underground trips.
We visit local sites midweek and run weekend trips further afield — including South Wales, Mendip, Peak District, Yorkshire and beyond.
More than just Caving
Our members are involved in cave digging, surveying, cave science, conservation, photography, archaeology, cave diving and caving expeditions around the world!
We’re proud to have contributed to major discoveries of the most significant cave systems in the Forest of Dean, including Otter Hole, Slaughter Stream Cave and Redhouse Lane Swallet.
We occasionally have trips further afield to caving regions like Assynt in Scotland and even some foreign caving regions too, like those in Italy and Ireland. These trips often incorporate activited other than caving, like hiking, canyoning, climbing and more!
Training & Socials
Aside from caving trips, we offer regular rope-based training sessions, equipment loan for new cavers, and monthly socials.
Our socials range from pub nights and caving-related talks to local summer walks and BBQs.
